We are always asked about the origins of the name Emtu. Although we share very different ancestry, when we met in 1998, we shared an identical last name, Mason. We wanted to use those two M’s in our trade name somehow. Creating a unique trademark can be like creating an email address; usually your first ten choices have usually been taken by somebody else. Searching through copyrights and trademarks showed that almost every permutation 2’s and M’s had been used already. We decided to combine an M and a 2 into M2, spell it phonetically, and voila!
The only other reference to the use of Emtu is EMTU, an acronym for the municipal transit system in the city of Sao Paolo, Brazil. We felt pretty sure there was no conflict of interest there, and Emtu was born.
